Much of Bucks County’s charm is in the pastoral, rustic atmosphere that the area has managed to retain well into the 21st century. And for those visiting, looking to soak in some of that quaint appeal, the Maplewood Farm Bed & Breakfast serves as the perfect place to stay. Situated on five acres of pristine pastureland just north of Gardenville in Plumstead Township, owner/operators Cindy and Dennis Marquis first opened their home to out-of-towners some 20 years ago and have enjoyed sharing their generous Bucks County hospitality ever since.
The Maplewood Farm features a range of idyllic natural wonders and wildlife, all centered on a 19th-century stone-and-plaster farmhouse that epitomizes simple yet refined country living. An impressive two-story bank barn houses a flock of Corriedale sheep and chickens, which remain busy providing fresh brown eggs for breakfast. The guestrooms feature sweeping views of the pasture and are comfortably decorated with a mix of local antique and reproduction furnishings. Depending on the time of year, visitors can relax by the in-ground pool surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens. In the colder months, guests can enjoy the original summer kitchen, which features a wood-burning stove placed in one of the unique double fireplaces, original to the 1792 architecture of the house.
While the bed & breakfast does most of its business by reservation – especially during the busy fall foliage season – Cindy happily welcomes the occasional walk-in. “Most of our clientele visit from the New York City and Washington, D.C. areas,” she says. “They’re in the area to enjoy the charm of New Hope, Peddler’s Village and cultural districts like Doylestown.” Although the area is a popular tourist destination, Cindy urges the community to keep Maplewood Farm in mind when they need lodging for overnight guests or business associates. “Some area residents don’t’ realize we’re here,” she continues. “We want people to know we’re in the neighborhood and invite them to call us when they need a room for their visiting friends and family.”
