As we turn the page on our calendars and welcome the proverbial clean slate, we’re afforded a rare opportunity.  While the stroke of midnight doesn’t precipitate wholesale change, the onset of a new year certainly puts us all in the collective mindset of starting anew.  And with the spirit of the season still fresh within us, what better time to discover the new you?

We sat down with local experts in the field of “reinvention” to discover simple steps you can take to reintroduce yourself to the world in 2010.

Face the Facts

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression.  And what’s everyone’s weapon of mass introduction?  Don’t worry; it’s not a trick question.  It’s your face.  And whether it’s the holdover effects of a summer spent frolicking in the sun or the winter winds whipping up these days, it takes a beating.

So why take chances with arguably the most important part of your look? “A facial can do wonders for your skin,” says Judith D’Andrea, owner of La Spa Arabesque in Doylestown. “I customize all my facials to each of my client’s individual needs.”  And whether your skin is dry, problematic, aged or even in good shape, everyone could use some help.

“You can definitely see the difference even after one visit but over time is where you really see results,” D’Andrea continues. “It helps to rejuvenate, repair and regenerate your skin.”  And adding a bit of incentive, facials at La Spa Arabesque include a light, relaxing massage.

Get Your Hair Did

With your face looking good, you need the hair to match.  After all, without the right frame, you’re not doing a work of art any justice. But if you’re not ready for a drastic change, you still have plenty of options.

“The easiest option for someone would be to change the interior of their hair,” explains Elizabeth Benke, owner of Elizabeth Benke and Associates Salon and Color Studio in town.  “By changing the direction or style of the layers, you can add a whole new dimension.”  Bangs present another option to change your look or alter how your hair frames your face.

Color is another aspect to consider. “We tend to be paler in the winter, and we generally warm up the tone of our clients’ hair this time of year,” adds Benke.  “You can add highlights or change the pattern of any existing color you might have for a change.”

Your Body of Work

While you might be looking and feeling fresh above the neck, like an iceberg, the majority still lurks below.  But it needn’t be a burden.  The warmer weather is closer than you might think, and 2010 is the year you can be ready.

But proceed wisely.  “A lot of people don’t understand that diet is the most important factor in shaping a new body,” says Harry DeCrescio, owner of the Doylestown Fitness Center. “Once you have that down, then you hit the gym.”

And once you’re there, DeCrescio stresses the importance of finding a balanced routine.  “It’s the combination of cardio and strength training that makes a difference,” he adds.  “Combined with the right diet, it all works together.”

And while facial treatments and haircuts provide an instant rejuvenation, DeCrescio reminds us that shaping your body takes a little more commitment.  “It has to become a lifestyle,” he says. “It’s not a quick fix. But if you tell yourself this is what I want and really become disciplined, you can reach your goals.”
