As a 10-year veteran of the contracting business, Ian Krueger is well aware business tends to drop off with the arrival of winter and the holiday season. But he also knows from experience that just because his schedule is a little lighter than usual, that doesn't necessarily mean there aren't areas of his clients' homes or properties that need attention.

"Things definitely slow up for me in the winter," says Krueger, owner of In Demand Home Improvements and General Contracting. "With that being the case, homeowners should be aware that winter could be the hardest season to weather. It can also be a good time to start new projects."

We sat down with Krueger to discuss what you should keep an eye on and what you can do when contractors aren't at their busiest.

Dodge the Draft

What's better than a toasty house after braving a cold winter's day? If you answered nothing, than we're in agreement. So why let ill-fitting old doors and windows let the elements spoil your retreat from the frigid air?

"Drafty doors and windows are a real killer," says Krueger. "Besides the fact that it can make your house uncomfortable, it's a real money drain. Especially with the older buildings in town, updating your windows and doors can really increase your energy efficiency."But that's not the only incentive. "The government is offering a tax credit up to $1,500 for adding any element to your home that improves energy use," continues Krueger. "A lot of my customers are taking advantage of the plan. I can print out the forms and give them right to my client."

Nothing Like a Warm Blanket

While the winter air can find it's way through seemingly sealed windows and doors, it can also bring the deep freeze to attics, basements and crawl spaces. And with pipes often running through these "hidden" areas of your home, the water inside is susceptible to freezing. Next stop: burst pipe town.

Krueger recommends making sure that all plumbing in your home, no matter where it runs, is properly insulated to ensure against disaster. "People should be aware of their plumbing," he says. "A little bit of preventive maintenance can go a long way in avoiding a big problem."

You Got the Look

No matter who you are, the cold temperatures and early sunsets tend to put a damper on your social calendar. Save fora few holidays, we entertain far less in the winter. What better time then to give your house a new look for when we celebrate the coming of spring with dinner parties, barbeques and other get-togethers?
